Position Overview

​​Hexion is seeking a highly capable Legal Counsel to support its European operations, with a primary focus on commercial contracting and a strong emphasis on regulatory compliance across the region. Based in Europe, this role will serve as a trusted legal partner to business leaders, providing practical, risk-balanced legal advice in a fast-paced, international environment. 

​The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in negotiating and drafting complex commercial agreements, along with a solid understanding of the European regulatory landscape, particularly as it relates to chemicals, manufacturing, sustainability, and cross-border business operations.​ 

Key Responsibilities

Commercial Contracts 

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including sales, supply, distribution, logistics, tolling, services, NDAs, and strategic partnership agreements across Europe. 
  • Provide pragmatic legal guidance on contract structure, risk allocation, pricing mechanisms, liability, indemnities, and termination provisions. 
  • Support cross-functional stakeholders including Sales, Procurement, Supply Chain, Finance, and Operations. 
  • Develop and maintain contract templates, playbooks, and negotiation guidelines to drive consistency and efficiency. 

 

Regulatory & Compliance 

  • Advise the business on European and local regulatory frameworks, including but not limited to: 
  • Product stewardship and environmental compliance 
  • Sustainability and ESG-related requirements 
  • Competition and antitrust considerations 
  • Monitor regulatory developments and assess their impact on Hexion’s European operations. 
  • Partner with EHS, Product Stewardship, and Compliance teams to ensure alignment and risk mitigation. 
  • Support internal audits, compliance initiatives, and regulatory inquiries as needed. 

 

Business Partnership & Risk Management 

  • Act as a strategic legal advisor to regional leadership, balancing legal risk with commercial objectives. 
  • Identify legal and regulatory risks early and recommend practical mitigation strategies. 
  • Support cross-border matters and collaborate with global legal colleagues and external counsel. 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of legal processes and knowledge sharing across the region. 
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures associated with compliance and best practices, including process improvements. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed Attorney, in good standing, admitted to practice in the Netherlands. 
  • 3 or more years of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably with practice supporting businesses. 
  • Familiarity with EMEA commercial laws. 
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills. 
  • Excellent business judgment and flexibility to cover a broad range of legal matters. 
  • Law degree with admittance to the Dutch bar; additional LLM preferred. 
  • Law firm experience preferred. 
  • Experience in a manufacturing/chemical company is desired.  
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills in English. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills. 
  • High level of integrity with ability to support a culture of compliance. 
  • Ability to work within a global, matrix environment.
