Position Overview

 

The Field Automation Engineer is responsible for hands-on commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical support of automated industrial systems. This role plays a key part in configuring, programming, testing, and supporting SMARTECH’s equipment at customer sites worldwide. The successful candidate will be customer-focused, technically skilled, and capable of resolving complex system issues efficiently, ensuring high performance and reliability of SMARTECH’s automation solutions. 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Configure and commission industrial control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA interfaces (Allen Bradley, Siemens, FactoryTalk, Intouch Wonderware, WinCC Professional). 
  • Troubleshoot automation systems on-site and remotely, diagnosing electrical, control logic, and communication faults. 
  • Support installation, calibration, and parameter configuration for industrial devices such as VFDs, servo motors, flowmeters, pressure transmitters, and temperature sensors. 
  • Develop and modify PLC and HMI programs to meet specific project or customer requirements. 
  • Verify system functionality through simulation, testing, and site acceptance procedures. 
  • Interface with third-party subsystems and devices using industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profinet, IO-Link, Peer-to-Peer Messaging). 
  • Supervise wiring, panel installation, and field instrument integration during equipment setup. 
  • Work closely with Project Managers and Support team to define customer configurations and support technical inquiries. 
  • Conduct system training, demonstrations, and customer handovers. 
  • Document technical issues, service activities, and lessons learned for continuous improvement. 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering (specialization in control systems or automation preferred). 
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, commissioning, or field service roles. 
  • Proven experience with PLC programming (Allen Bradley RSLogix/Studio 5000, Siemens Step 7/TIA Portal) and HMI/SCADA configuration. 
  • Knowledge of industrial safety standards and control system best practices. 
  • Experience reading and interpreting P&IDs, electrical schematics, and network diagrams. 
  • Ability to travel up to 60% for commissioning and customer support assignments. 
  • A qualified electrician diploma or equivalent practical electrical experience is an asset.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication abilities with customers and team members. 
  • Comfortable working independently in industrial and manufacturing environments. 
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills. 
  • Physically able to perform tasks related to system setup, calibration, and troubleshooting. 
  • Valid Driver licence 
  • A valid passport and the ability to travel frequently domestically or internationally.
