Position Overview

The Principal Edge & OT Architect is responsible for designing and governing the edge architecture and OT integration layer that connects manufacturing systems to the digital platform.

This role ensures:

  • Reliable and secure data ingestion from plant systems
  • Consistent implementation of the semantic model at the edge
  • Support for real-time AI inference and decision-making

This role ensures that what is designed in the cloud can actually work in the plant.

Job Responsibilities

1. Define Edge Architecture and Runtime

Design edge platform including:

  • Runtime environments (containers, orchestration)
  • Deployment models (on-prem, hybrid)

Define integration with enterprise edge platforms and ensure scalability across multiple sites.

2. Integrate OT Systems (Technical Integration)

Own the technical connectivity and protocol-level integration with OT systems:

  • Define integration patterns for PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, historians, and industrial data sources
  • Support protocols such as OPC-UA, Modbus, and MQTT
  • Ensure compatibility with existing plant infrastructure

Note: Semantic translation and data modeling for OT data are governed by the Principal Manufacturing & Semantic Architect.

3. Enforce Semantic Model at the Edge

Ensure data is:

  • Normalized
  • Validated
  • Aligned with canonical definitions before leaving the plant

Prevent "garbage-in" at scale.

4. Enable Edge-Based AI Inference

Design architecture to support:

  • Local model execution
  • Real-time decision-making

Ensure:

  • Low latency
  • High reliability
  • Offline capability

5. Design for Security and Compliance

Implement:

  • Secure communication (outbound-only patterns)
  • Device identity and authentication
  • Certificate management

Align with enterprise security standards.

6. Support Deployment and Lifecycle Management

Define:

  • Edge deployment processes
  • Update mechanisms
  • Version control for edge components

Ensure maintainability across sites and customers.

7. Collaborate Across Teams

Partner with:

  • Principal Manufacturing & Semantic Architect (canonical model enforcement at the edge)
  • Principal Industrial AI Data Architect (data pipeline integration and edge inference data requirements)
  • Platform Engineering (cloud-to-edge deployment and orchestration)
  • Plant Operations teams (site-specific requirements and constraints)

Ensure consistent execution across domains.

Key Competencies

  • Deep understanding of plant operations and constraints

  • Ability to design practical, deployable solutions

  • Strong problem-solving in constrained environments

  • Cross-domain communication (engineering, IT, digital)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering — Electrical, Computer, Chemical, Industrial, or related field (Master's preferred)
  • 10+ years of experience in OT systems, industrial automation, or edge/IoT architectures
  • Strong experience with PLC/DCS/SCADA systems and industrial protocols (OPC-UA, Modbus, MQTT)
  • Experience with edge-enabled inference model deployment
  • Experience integrating OT with IT/cloud platforms

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with:
  • Enterprise edge platforms (e.g., Dell NativeEdge, Azure IoT Edge, AWS IoT Greengrass)
  • Containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Cloud platforms (AWS preferred)
  • Familiarity with:
  • Cybersecurity in OT environments
  • Real-time systems and constraints

Leadership Expectations

  • Operate as a thought leader in edge architecture and OT integration
  • Influence without direct authority across multiple teams and partners
  • Drive standards adoption for edge deployment and OT connectivity across internal and external stakeholders
  • Balance long-term architectural vision with near-term delivery needs

Work Environment & Travel

Travel to manufacturing sites and partner locations as needed (~10–25%).
