Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Chemical Laboratory Technician to join our Research & Technical Services team. In this role, you will support the development, testing, and scale-up of chemical products. You'll work in a collaborative lab environment, assisting chemists, maintaining equipment, analyzing data, and ensuring safe, compliant lab operations.
Core Responsibilities
- Support chemists in the synthesis and testing of new and existing chemical products
- Conduct a range of physical and chemical tests using lab equipment and instrumentation
- Laboratory-scale manufacturing of end use products for ASTM testing
- Execute and monitor laboratory-scale batches with clear, concise notes and observations
- Timely use of computer systems and databases to log data and track samples (LIMS experience is a plus
- Maintain detailed, accurate, and organized lab notebooks and technical records
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (R&D, Technical Service, production, engineering, QC, etc.)
- Collect, label, and prepare chemical samples for testing and proper disposal
- Manage and track chemical inventory and ensure supplies are well-stocked
- Routine laboratory housekeeping in compliance with safety standards
- Read, understand, and follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for handling chemicals
Expanded Responsibilities
- Analyze test results and assist in preparing technical data summaries and reports
- Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot lab instruments and small-scale machinery
- Ensure lab practices comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, ISO)
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and contribute to lab efficiency initiatives
- Support onboarding and training of new lab personnel (as applicable)
What You Bring
- Strong teamwork and communication skills
- Ability to remain composed and effective in a fast-paced environment
- Strong time management skills
- Ability to work independently
- 2 years of hands-on experience in a chemical laboratory
- Familiarity with synthesis of thermosetting polymers such as phenol-, urea-, melamine-formaldehyde
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and data entry tools; statistical knowledge a plus
- Safety-conscious, detail-oriented, and proactive
Minimum Qualifications
- Associate degree or Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, or a related scientific field (or equivalent laboratory coursework)
- Prior industry experience in product development, technical services, manufacturing support, or 2 years chemical laboratory experience
- Basic understanding of laboratory practices and chemical safety
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written procedures
- Ability to perform repetitive testing with consistency and accuracy
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office suite, data entry, electronic documentation)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform hands-on laboratory tasks
- Ability to lift and handle materials up to 50 lbs
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Work may involve exposure to chemicals under controlled laboratory conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship, co-op, or academic laboratory experience
- Exposure to chemical manufacturing or quality control environments
- Experience working with standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Experience or interest in working with data, statistics and graphs
- SAP knowledge
