Position Overview

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of production at the Springfield, OR plant.  Responsibility includes the leadership and direction of the workforce, recruiting and training of employees, process efficiencies, process & project engineering coordination, and the implementation of all company policies and programs as directed by the Site Leader. 

Able to step up and act as the Springfield Site Leader in his/her absence. Interface with various regulators and Government agencies as required. 

Job Responsibilities

SAFETY 

• Maintain plant operating guides, make regular improvements to them, and assure that training is sufficient so that all Employees comprehend these guides. 
• Emphasize safety during daily contacts with personnel. 
• Ensure that all requirements in the Hexion Safety Manual are followed. 
• Oversee, review incident investigations, process hazard analyses, operator certification check sheets, and annual procedure reviews. 
• Support and lead Safety Investigations. 

QUALITY 

• Coordinate Operations to maintain Hexion quality programs at the plant site. 
• Help maintain the ISO and Responsible Care certificates with internal / external personnel. 
• Investigate quality problems and take action to prevent their recurrence. 
• Use structured problem-solving techniques, analytical tools, and teamwork to improve production unit performance.  

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 

• Ensure production compliance with environmental regulations and Hexion policies/procedures. 
• Interact with the community and regulatory agencies on environmental issues as required. 
• Provide technical expertise to onsite and offsite emergency responders.  
• Identify and prioritize environmental improvement opportunities. 
• Promptly report environmental incidents to appropriate authorities and within Hexion using appropriate means. 

MAINTENANCE 

• Coordinate Operations to adhere to the plant maintenance program. 
• Ensure Work Orders are issued by Operations as appropriate and coordinate maintenance activity with Maintenance Leadership. 
• Help investigate maintenance problems and take action to prevent recurrence. 
• Use structured problem-solving techniques, analytical tools, and teamwork to improve reliability and unit performance. 
• Ensure equipment PMs are performed as defined and required. 
• Ensure and authorize plant shutdowns are performed as required.  

PRODUCTIVITY / COST 

• Identify opportunities to reduce expenses and take action to implement cost saving projects and procedures. 
• Prioritize operational needs and objectives to the Site Leader, Engineering, Maintenance and other corporate resources. 
• Develop operating improvements to minimize waste volumes / downtime. 
• Complete inventory reporting and maintain levels to meet objectives. 
• Utilize Lean Six Sigma tools and processes to optimize flow and cost through the production unit. 
• Work with Product Engineering, Authors, Quality and CI personnel to continually improve cycle times, batch performances, and yields.  
• Manage Operations Associate overtime and the production schedule to ensure qualified employees are available when required and costs are minimized. 
• Become an SME on the overall Spray Dry process. 

PEOPLE LEADERSHIP 

• Ensure compliance with Hexion policies. 
• Identify the training needs for Operations employees and provide the necessary training to meet those requirements.  
• Manage the Operations Progression and Cross Training programs. 
• Manage the Operations Crew structure to ensure that Crew skills are balanced 
• Facilitate the involvement of Operation employees in team activities. 
• Lead hiring hourly production employees. 
• Identify good performance and provide corrective feedback as needed. 
• Manage 3-4 Production Supervisors. Ensure their goals and day-to-day work is aligned with all short- and long-range site objectives. 
• Perform annual performance appraisals. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Previous experience in an industrial manufacturing facility; preferably in chemical manufacturing, min 4 years. 
• Previous supervision experience with experience managing direct and indirect reports 
• Previous experience working within a multidiscipline environment interfacing and coordinating Operations with Engineering, Maintenance, Supply Chain, EHS, and other COE departments. 
• Experience with inventory management 
• Experience with ISO or similar quality management systems 
• Strong organizational, leadership, analytical and communication capabilities. 
• Excellent computer literacy capabilities are required, particularly with Excel 
• Experience with SAP or similar ERP systems are beneficial 
• Experience with Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing principles preferred 
• Knowledge of safety, environmental, and industrial hygiene rules and regulations are an asset 
• Possesses flexibility to adapt to changing demands 
• Must be able to coordinate emergency situations 
• Must be a highly motivated self-starter 
• Must be willing to travel in North America (less than 10%) 

Education Requirements: 

• College degree in engineering or technical discipline.   
• Candidates with significant relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. 

Safety Sensitive Site: Fit for Duty, Fitness Compatible requirement.  

• Physical: Requires the ability to wear full and half face respirators.  Must be able to work in all weather conditions.  Walking, sitting, climbing, lifting, balancing, kneeling, reaching, handling, dexterity, talking, hearing, seeing. Possess the ability to handle weights up to 55 lbs. Requires visual acuity to distinguish colors.  
• Aptitudes: must possess the ability to understand the meaning of words and their ideas, as well as instructions and their underlying principles.  Perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately and possess eye-hand coordination.  Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English. Must be able to motivate a team and implement change. 
• Temperaments: Must have the ability to accept responsibility, remain calm and perform duties under stress, adapt to situations requiring preciseness and adapt to changing duties and responsibilities.
